Erasmus Intensive Program
    About Us

The international project Urban and Cultic Space in roman Apulum: An archaelogical fieldschool financed by the EU through the Erasmus Intensive Program is the result of a cooperation between four universities from three countries (Romania, Germany, and Hungary).

The project will take place in Alba Iulia, one of the most important urban centres of Roman Dacia during the 2nd-3rd centuries AD. The structure which is going to be researched was identified in the last days of a previous international archaeological excavation, the so-called Apulum Project, which took place in the late nineties – early two thousands in the same area of the Roman Colonia Aurelia Apulensis. This project unearthed a shrine dedicated to Liber Pater situated in an intensively used urban area (workshops, living quarters, cultic space) with challenging archaeology. Therefore, the site offers an ideal opportunity both for the specialists and students interested in Roman provincial archaeology.

50 students and 14 lecturers from the mentioned three countries will participate in the project. The interdisciplinary archaeological excavation will be organized in the late summer of 2013 and will involve, beside archaeology, art history, restoration and conservation, archaeobotanics, aerial archaeology, geophysics, topography, and architecture.

The training of the students will be based on the combination of theory (in form of introductory lectures) and practice (in form of field and laboratory work) related to the mentioned disciplines.
