New Topics, Sources and Methods in the Historical Research:

Reflections and Perspectives

On the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Annales Universitatis Apulensis. Series Historica journal, the editorial committee intends to dedicate one issue to a central question for the historian’s work: the primary sources and the new methods applied to explore them, as well as new topics that remain incompletely examined in the Romanian and international historiography. To fulfill this goal, we will organize, on June 4-5, 2021, an online workshop entitled

New Topics, Sources, and Methods in the Historical Research: Reflections and Perspectives

The editorial committee of the journal wishes to invite specialists in the fields of History, Archaeology, Heritage Studies, and other convergent fields to present papers dealing with major research topics, sources, methods and other aspects that have emerged during the last decades, as well as discussing their prospects for development in the short-, medium- and long-term. We have taken into consideration the conception that the liberation of historical research from the constraints of Communist censorship has allowed a reconfiguration of officially accepted interpretations and the examination of new sources and research topics less favored or even forbidden during the Communist regime. From another perspective, the growing tendency towards interdisciplinarity within historical research has led to the creation of new methods of investigation, resulting in the production of precise and nuanced answers to historians’ questions. More recently, historical studies broadly conceived have been impacted by the consequences of economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the channeling of research resources primarily towards economic and profit-making activities, and the repositioning of decision-makers opinions as regards the usefulness of the Humanities in general, giving privileged attention instead to specific social priorities.

Possible Topics include, but are not limited, to:

 - Archaeometric analysis in the interpretation of archaeological artefacts

- Non-invasive or minimally invasive methods in archaeological and monument research.

- The role of experimental archaeology for cultural heritage.

- Migrations in the early Middle Ages in Central and Eastern Europe.

- Ethnicity and ethnogenesis in the history and archaeology of the Middle Ages.

- The development of administrative institutions and the evolution of lay elites in the Middle Ages.

- New methods of investigation in urban history.

- Sources of social history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

- Projects to digitize and provide access to digital collections of medieval and premodern primary sources.

Why the History of Sport Matters: Personal Endeavours, Community Colours, and National Pride during the 19th and 20th Centuries

Editors:

Marius Rotar (1 Decembrie 1918 University, Alba Iulia)

Bogdan Popa (Nicolae Iorga Institute, Bucharest)

We invite authors to submit articles on the general topic of Why the History of Sport Matters: Personal Endeavours, Community Colours, and National Pride during the 19th and 20th Centuries, for an issue of Annales Universitatis Apulensis. Series Historica, published by the 1 Decembrie 1918 University of Alba Iulia (Romania).

We start from the assumption that the history of sport is, despite its critics, an established discipline. It may and it cannot be separated from the great historical events and processes. However, one must not forget that every champion or simple participant is more than a winner or a loser. There are deep personal histories, originating from family, community, social, regional, national, gender, race issues. Whilst many of these stories may never be known, some of them enhance the history of sport beyond the lists of champions and events. We aim to understand why choosing a certain sport (as a professional or amateur practitioner, or simply as a fan) was important on a personal, family, community, or national level throughout the last two centuries. What mattered most: family-induced practices, (gendered or socialised) school curricula, community peer pressure? How influential were the achievements of local and national teams or individual champions?

Possible topics include (without being limited to):

More than Football: The Personal, Regional, or National History of the Disciplines

Sports Diplomacy during the 20th Century

The Olympics between National Pride and Personal Achievements

Sport and Politics in Eastern and Western Europe during and after the Cold War

Women Sport: The Last Great Gender Divide?

Issues of Fandom (hooliganism; traditions; community and national pride).
