Call for Papers
International Conference
Royalty and Republic: Europe’s Political Establishments in the Early 1920s
14 – 18 September 2022

The upcoming year, 2022, commemorates the Centennial of King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie Coronation as sovereigns of the Romanian nation. Alba Iulia, the city where the ceremony of crowning took place, marks the Centennial of the Coronation (2021–2022) through a series of cultural events designed to expand and educate public perspective and perception on this historical event and the circumstances surrounding it.

With this memorial context as background, the conference aims to emphasize the political issues and developments in Europe at the moment of the coronation, since in the closing phases of the First World War, the empires which had existed in Europe collapsed (Austro-Hungarian, Russian, Ottoman, and German), breaking apart into several sovereign states.

Papers will consider issues as: the monarchy pattern in Europe in the first decades of the twentieth century, contents and symbols of the ceremonials of the coronation, the rise of the republican idea and other realities associated to the post-Paris Conference establishment, the transfer of power to the new political structures, parliamentary and presidential elections, new adopted constitutions, political parties, and other possible topics.

The presentations in the conference will be in English, and they will be given at “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia.

The submitted papers will be subject to an anonymous peer-review evaluation.

The papers presented at the conference will be published in 2023, in a volume produced by Cambridge Scholars Publishing.

The organizers will cover accommodation, travel costs, as well as the publication of the conference proceedings in a volume.

Abstracts should be in English and no longer than 300 words. The deadline for abstract submission is 31 May 2022.

The programme of the conference and norms for publication will be sent subsequently.
Final papers must be sent no later than 1 December 2022.
